Elements August issue: Lithium: Less is More

Lithium was created during the Big Bang at about 13.8 Ga. Lithium is concentrated in Earth’s upper continental crust and in 124 mineral species, the greatest mineralogical diversity being found in pegmatites. Lithium occurs naturally in two isotopes, 6Li and 7Li, which are readily fractionated, thus becoming sensitive to geological and environmental processes. Closed-basin brines (58%) and pegmatites plus related granites (26%) constitute the main sources of exploitable lithium worldwide. Life as we know it at the start of the 21st century would not be possible without lithium as it is used in a myriad of applications ranging from lithium-ion batteries to medicine.

This issue of Elements  also features the Goldschmidt2020 conference report as well as a report on the recent GS-EAG virtual town hall meeting: Black Lives Matter: Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Geochemistry.

Current EAG members will soon receive their print copies of Elements. Members also have online access to all back issues (user id = email address, password = EAG membership number).

Student sponsorship program (virtual events): next deadline 1 September

The next deadline to apply for the EAG Student Sponsorship Program is 1 September 2020.

With nearly all upcoming conferences switching to virtual format, this year's program has been adapted to allow students to apply for funding to participate in virtual events. Successful applicants will receive sponsorship to cover the registration and abstract fees.

Termination of Cryogenian ironstone deposition by deep ocean euxinia

Widespread deposition of iron-rich sedimentary rocks (ironstones) occurred during the Sturtian ice age, the earlier of two Cryogenian ‘Snowball Earth’ glaciations. However, the reasons for the termination of Cryogenian Iron Formation...

Triple oxygen isotopes of meteoric hydrothermal systems – implications for palaeoaltimetry

We use triple oxygen isotopes of altered granitic rocks to determine the isotope composition of meteoric waters in a fossil hydrothermal system, the low δ18O Eocene Idaho Batholith, originally studied by Criss and Taylor (1983). In doing...

From rocks to icebergs, the natural world tends to break into cubes

[Science Magazine] Perhaps the Cubists were right. Researchers have found that when everything from icebergs to rocks breaks apart, their pieces tend to resemble cubes. The finding suggests a universal rule of fragmentation at scales ranging from the microscopic to the...

Early Mars was covered in ice sheets, not flowing rivers, researchers say

[Science Daily] A large number of the valley networks scarring Mars's surface were carved by water melting beneath glacial ice, not by free-flowing rivers as previously thought, according to new UBC research published today in Nature Geoscience. The findings effectively throw cold water on...

Deep-sea microbes survive on less energy than we thought possible

[New Scientist] Deep-sea microbes can survive on less energy than previously thought necessary for any living thing, potentially changing the definition of life as we know it. “[This] broadens the range of environments we might consider plausible to search for life,” says James Bradley at...

Red Sea corals' heat tolerance offers hope for climate crisis

[The Guardian] The scientists cranked the heat above the lethal threshold, and waited for the corals to die. “We were heating the water one degree above the summer maximum temperature,” says Anders Meibom, a researcher with the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of...

Mystery Solved: Bright Areas on Ceres Come From Salty Water Below

[Jet Propulsion Laboratory - Caltech] Data from NASA's recent Dawn mission answers two long-unresolved questions: Is there liquid inside Ceres, and how long ago was the dwarf planet geologically active? NASA's Dawn spacecraft gave scientists extraordinary close-up views of the dwarf planet...

Active volcanoes found on Venus

[The Guardian] Scientists have identified 37 volcanic structures on Venus that appear to have been recently active – and probably still are today – painting the picture of a geologically dynamic planet and not a dormant world as long thought. The research focused on ring-like structures...

Snowball Earth Was Likely Triggered By Plunge In Sun’s Radiation

[Forbes] At least twice in Earth’s history, beginning an estimated 700 million years ago, our planet was engulfed in snow and ice in quick succession. But now Two MIT scientists suggest that these events were likely linked to dramatic plunges in the amount of solar radiation reaching Earth’s...

Martian meteorite to be sent back to Mars to calibrate instruments

[The Guardian] A small piece of rock will be hurled into space this week on one of the strangest interplanetary voyages ever attempted. A tiny piece of Martian basalt the size of a 10p coin will be launched on board a US robot probe on Thursday and propelled towards the red planet on a seven-...

First active leak of sea-bed methane discovered in Antarctica

[The Guardian] The first active leak of methane from the sea floor in Antarctica has been revealed by scientists. The researchers also found microbes that normally consume the potent greenhouse gas before it reaches the atmosphere had only arrived in small numbers after five...
