Early registration deadline is 12 June

The early registration rate for Goldschmidt2018 in Boston is 12 June. Register before then to save $100 off the regular rate. 12 June is also the deadline to sign up for the Mentor Program, which pairs first-time and early career attendees with experienced scientists. Mentors offer advice on navigating the conference and making it a valuable experience for mentees.

As usual, EAG members benefit from the member rates. Join/renew or find your membership number in Member login.

Additionally, more than 20 exciting workshops and field trips will be offered before and after the meeting. Make the most of your trip by attending a workshop taught by leading scientists or by visiting some of the area's fascinating geological sites.

New in Geochemical Perspectives

Cosmochemistry along the Rhine

This new Geochemical Perspectives contribution by Herbert Palme traces the development of German cosmochemistry from the excitement of work on Apollo sample returns to current debates in the formation of meteorites and their components. It illuminates the crucial role played by neutron activation techniques applied at the Max Planck Institute in constraining planetary compositions and evolution. This issue further charts a fascinating collection of interlinked cosmochemical projects while providing insight into the different research environments within the Max Planck and University systems.

Elements April issue: Comets

The articles in this issue of Elements provide a fascinating account of comets and the making of our planetary system. We learn why comets are visible to the naked eye, about their complex organic geochemistry, the surprising find of free O2, and the likelihood of a comet impact on Earth. Articles present concise reviews of what has been learned regarding the mineralogy, geochemistry, and geology of comets from the Giotto, Vega, Stardust, Stardust NEXT, Deep Impact, and Rosetta...

Toxic anthropogenic pollutants reach the deepest ocean on Earth

Persistent organic pollutants (PCBs and PBDEs) were analysed in sediment core samples (0-2 cm) from the southern Mariana Trench at water depths of 7000-11000 m. ∑PCBs concentrations ranged from 931 to 4195 pg/g, far higher than those recorded before in marine sediments from shallower depths. Toxic Equivalence (TEQ) of...
